Becoming a Medical Administrator

Every business needs good management, and healthcare is no exception. A hospital needs good planning and efficient running. A medical administrator takes care of running the hospital efficiently, and coordinates and supervises service delivery. Becoming a medical administrator means that you are familiar with the  procedures of a hospital or a laboratory, medical billing, and insurance.

Becoming a medical administrator requires preparation, usually with medical administrator training. A bachelor’s degree is not enough, a masters or doctorate is usually required. A medical administrator must know special terminology (medical), database management, medical coding and records management. Good communication skills, computing, typing proficiency, good English grammar, and punctuation skills are also factor in becoming a medical administrator.

Good communication skills are required, because the medical administrator spends part of his or her time telecommuting and computing, and a good deal of time speaking with doctors, nurses, and assistants.

Becoming a medical administrator requires knowledge in management theories and practices. Education credentials include a master’s degree in public, business, or health services administration.  Looking for these kinds of specializations, the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education published a list of 72 schools who had their programs accredited for this degree.

Previous work experience is very important in becoming a top medical administrator. If you are familiar with insurance rules, you have to be up to date with the new applications that will help the medical administrator in his or her work. This position means interaction with many people, so diplomacy and hospital procedures knowledge is important, also, a medical administrator should have the ability of data interpretation. Most medical administrators are doctors or surgeons, who become administrators in their department and move up from there.

Diplomatic skills and flexibility are a must in this field. A medical administrator is a leader who can analyze information and make quick and good decisions. A medical administrator must also motivate others to execute his or her decisions. This is a hard job, requiring long hours.

If you decide to become a medical administrator, you will not have the position right away, but you can start as as a department manager. With a Master’s degree you can begin as an assistant medical administrator, one step beneath your position.
