If you love sweets and foods that are rich in sugar, you may be in for some major health risks and would definitely benefit from controlling your diet, especially if your family has a history of diabetes.

What is diabetes?

When a person has a problem secreting insulin, this could mean that his or her body will have a hard time allowing blood glucose to enter the cells and be converted into energy. When this happens, the body is not able to create the needed energy to do work, and the high levels of glucose which remain in the body eventually damage the nerves, blood vessels and other organs. Diabetes is the condition relating to the production of insulin and the control of glucose in the body.

How do you know you have diabetes?
Symptoms of diabetes include feeling thirsty or hungry too often. Abnormal weight loss may also be evidence of  diabetes, although, those with type II diabetes are often overweight. Fatigue and irritability are other signs that a person suffers from this condition. If you think you have problems controlling your blood sugar, are overweight, eat a diet high in sugar, or find yourself getting sudden dizzy spells, go to your doctor and ask to be tested.

If you are diagnosed with this disease, it is very important to learn steps to control it. Controlling diabetes can prevent further complications from arising, and will help you get and stay healthy and in shape. If left uncontrolled, diabetes will eventually kill you.

Controlling diabetes

It is highly necessary, in controlling diabetes, to lessen sugar intake, or eliminate refined sugars altogether.  Since there is no cure for the illness as of yet,the best you can do is take measures to keep it from worsening and causing other complications. Eating plenty of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats, and limiting processed food and fruits, and avoiding all fast food, is essential to controlling your diabetes.

You might want to consult a doctor or a dietician so that they can work out a meal plan for you. Aside from following this healthy lifestyle, you may also want to include physical activities in your daily routine. Exercising actually helps you lower your blood sugar and stay healthy, thus, helping you control your diabetes.

The most vulnerable part of a person with diabetes, is their feet. Diabetes can cause poor circulation and loss of feeling in the limbs. When diabetes is at this stage, the legs and feet should be monitored for cuts and bruises. Infection and loss of circulation can lead to amputation of the legs and feet if not controlled.

Diabetes is a difficult disease, but one can lead a normal, healthy life, even with diabetes. If you are diagnosed with this disease, let it be a wake up call to you to change your diet and get more exercise. Exercise and a healthy diet can keep your diabetes in check, so that it doesn’t run your life.
